Bring Your Jam To My Session

Look, since it’s Friday and my bank balance isn’t on my side, I decided to do something cost effective. I know I’m tired of paying silly R150 damages at the door and a drink for R50 (SMDH at these ridiculous charges).

So, since I’ve just discovered a couple of music stores (Kohinoor Store & Mike O Gram) that sell old classics for as cheap as R10 a vinyl, I suggested we have a Jam Session/House Party. The plan is simply to laze around, consume beverages marked ‘Not for sale to persons under the age of 18’ and have a jam session...as simple as that!

So, this is the plan:

Everyone brings drinks, food, a blankie and a game to play...the only rules are as follows: No heels and no sleeping till that blooming sun comes out! There’ll be a musical instrument added to the mix too, it’s called a guitar and even the musical virgins can get lucky with strumming our guest just once. Also, most importantly, a special guest, Nikon D700 will be there to alter the moments by holding them still for us to reminisce on later on.

The playlist consists of the following; Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, Jim Morrison, Fela & Femi Kuti, The Roots, Billie Holiday, Lil Dragon, Nina Simone, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Bob Dylan, Grizzly Bears, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Eyedentity, Bob Marley, Busi Mhlongo, Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse (LIVE), Teflon Brothers, Les Nubians, Janelle Monae, Letta Mbulu, De La Soul, DJ Premier, J Dilla, Loscil, Mick Boogie & Terry Urban mixtapes, Blu and Exile, Lauryn Hill, Full Crate, to name a few. Gosh I can’t wait for my turn to mix…

For me as a music-disciple, this is pure fantasy and I had to make it come alive. I wanted to squeeze in some black and white old French movies but yeah, let’s just say it didn’t happen.

This is the level of our ‘coolitude’ this weekend; conversations, music, games and more music. So until the turn-table needle breaks, the cassette jams, the cd’s scratch or our ears bleed music, there’s no stopping.

Jam Session, that’s my weekend. What are your plans?
