Going into this interview I expected Lee-Roy to be the straight. to. the. point. kind of a guy. To my pleasant surprise though, he is a colourful personality, reminding me of something I already know: that creatives are hard to box. Even harder to box is a gifted 27 year old photographer who thinks of himself as a mixture of James Bond, Pootie Tang, Black Dynamite, Tevin Campbell, Keith Sweat and Mos Def.

Apart from his gripping sense of humour, the level on which he is family orientated stood out.

He gave a brief background on his family, his mom, dad, brother and sisters, where and how they are with the biggest child like grin on his face. His father and mentor, Fanie Jason, who he spoke very fondly of, wanted him to go into Pin up photography focusing mainly on fashion and models. However Lee-Roy had a burning need to explore all the aspects of his creativity. Finding inspiration in all types of things, people, places, shadow and sizes.

His family [beyond biological boundaries] on 75, consists of some of his favourite photographers such as Khumbelo, Native soul, Rudzani, kotn,Lebogang, Makhaya just to name but a few.

As he took me through the different paths that have led him to where he is currently, he spoke in reminiscence of his teenage years. Days spent roaming Lady Street in Cape Town looking for women he could photograph. [Many of whom were served with the infamous "do you want to be a model?" line]

Lee-Roy moved to Johannesburg about five years ago because the city promised to lay at his feet endless opportunities to grow as a man as well as a photographer. And such an opportunity presented itself to him, on a flight to Botswana for a wedding shoot. A request to shoot TKZ's cd cover for their comeback album Coming home. A project which was undoubtedly one of his favourites.

He's a beast behind a lense this Man. Very creatively playful but channels all the right energies in the right way.

He showed me another side of myself I had never seen in his 100th Album.

Much respect and hope to see his name in neon lights sooner than later.
