The idea of studying Bachelor of Computing, and working as Account Manager in IT, doesn’t conjure up images of one who’s not only interested in interior design, but also pursues it as an alternative career. But that’s exactly what Carla Thomas does, an IT chick moonlighting as a furniture designer – or is it the other way around?

But, begs the question, why furniture and design? ‘As shallow as it sounds, I like beautiful things,’ says Carla, who is due to exhibit at Decorex later this year.

Having started her company, CasaNyumba, she sees the potential that the furniture industry, in SA and across the continent, has but isn’t channeled correctly.

I think we need to look inwards and reflect what makes us who we are, for ourselves as Africans – and for the rest of the world to admire and support.
