I came across the trailer for Medicine for Melancholy a while back and, after spreading the word, a friend eventually came across the film. Something drew me to its indie black & white low-budget look and, of course, the black people in it. I’m a sucker for watching black people on screen. I can’t get enough of it, no matter how stereotypical the storylines and the characters get. I guess because the opportunities are so few, I would not have minded at all if it was some wack piece of crap.
But this film is one of a kind and a have-to-get-my-hands-on-any-sort-of-copy-I-can-and-immediately-share-with-friends-and-enemies-alike type of thing. For the incredibly realistic way the two characters literally dance their way through the intricacies of a one night stand and its aftermath (you almost feel like you are intruding on very private moments). For the gorgeously cinematic way the writer/director, Barry Jenkins, pays homage to the city of San Francisco. For the way he balances love with the politics of space, race and class in the city. It is a beautiful joyride (with an awesome soundtrack too!!!) that every film lover should check out.
Reviews are pretty lame, despite the fact that I’m doing one now. I guess I’m trying to say, check out this film without giving away too much.
